On July 19th, Dong Energy and Siemens signed a framework agreement regarding the delivery of three hundred 6 MW offshore wind turbines. The turbines are designated for specific Dong projects in the UK and are to be erected between 2014 and 2017.
The subject matter of the contract is Siemens' latest 6 MW offshore turbine. It has a rotor diameter of 154 m and a gearboxless direct drive. Siemens will design, manufacture, erect and service the machinery. In addition, the contract partners agreed on product and performance guarantees corresponding to the volume of the framework agreement. Dong has committed itself to pay cancellation charges if some of the projects mentioned in the agreement fail to be implemented. Whether the projects in the contract are realized and the total rated capacity installed depends on the governmental authorization processes and the individual positive investment decision made by Dong.
"This supply contract will enable Dong Energy to install much larger turbines from 2014 onward than has been possible in the past. Therefore, this is an important part of our strategy to further expand in the area of offshore wind and to strengthen our position as a leading global company", said Carsten Krogsgaard Thomsen, incumbent Chairman of the Executive Board at Dong Energy A/S.
Currently, Dong and Siemens are working together on the construction of the British wind farms Lincs, London Array and West of Duddon Sands, the German Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm and the Anholt wind farm in Denmark. These projects have a total rated capacity of 2,000 MW.
