German offshore wind farm Hohe See is on its way

Siemens will provide the complete offshore wind power plat solutions for the Hohe See offshore wind project 90 km north of the German island Borkum. The inter-array cabling contract with a value of approximately € 80 million has been awarded to VBMS.

The Hohe See offshore wind project is the largest German offshore wind farm to date. It will stretch over an area of 40 km². The 71 wind turbines to be installed at the site will have a combined capacity of just less than half a Gigawatt. 50,1 % of the park is owned by the EnBW The other 49,9% are owned by Enbridge Inc. Both companies agreed on joining forces during the construction of the project and afterwards.

Siemens started to develop the project-specific solution for the foundations of the wind power plant last year. As a result they came up with a monopile design with a length of up to 80 m and a weight of up to 1,500 t to anchor the wind turbines solidly into the sea bed at a water depths of up to 40 m. These foundations as well as the transitions pieces will be delivered by Siemens’ partner GeoSea.

VBMS, a subsidiary of Boskalis will provide the inter-array cabling. The works include the supply, installation and burial as well as termination and testing of 79 33-kV-inter-array cables.

After the final investment decision at the end of 2016, the construction works are going to start in early 2018 and are expected to be finished in the third quarter of 2019.

Siemens Gamesa will supply three onshore wind farms in Norway including 70 units of its Onshore OptimaFlex wind turbines. The SWT-DD-130 turbines will each feature a rated capacity of 4.2 MW and a 130 m diameter rotor. All turbines will be installed on steel towers with 125 meter hub heights. The project sites with 15, 18 and 37 units are located in the Bjerkreim and Ha municipalities – approximately 50 km south-east of Stavanger. Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured a new order in India from ReNew Power, India’s largest renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP). The scope includes the supply of 270 units of the SG 2.1-122 wind turbines, with a total capacity of 567 MW, to two wind power facilities.
