Siemens wins first offshore wind project in Belgium

Siemens has entered the offshore wind market in Belgium with a first order of direct drive wind turbines for the 309 MW Rentel wind project.

Siemens will supply, install, commission and service 42 wind turbines of the large direct drive platform. A long-term service agreement for a period of 17 years will provide customized offshore service and logistics solutions for the turbines, and includes Siemens’ data-driven advanced remote diagnostics and monitoring. The customer is Rentel NV, part of the Otary partnership, a conglomerate of specialists from the Belgian renewable energy industry including investment and development companies.

The Rentel offshore wind power plant is located about 40 kilometers off the Belgian North Sea coast. The 42 Siemens wind turbines will be installed on monopole foundations in water depths ranging from 22 to 36 meters. The first turbines are expected to deliver power to the Belgian grid by mid-2018, while the entire offshore project is planned to become fully operational by the end of 2018.

Four new onshore-projects with a combined rating of more than 84 megawatts (MW) will extend Siemens Gamesa’s fleet of direct-drive wind turbines with a further 27 units. Customer GETEC green energy AG has ordered nine SWT-3.2-113 wind turbines for the Energiepark Profen project located in Saxony-Anhalt. An additional five units of the same model will be installed at PNE WIND’s Bederkesa-Alfstedt wind power plant near Bremerhaven. 11 SWT-3.0-113 wind turbines will be installed at the Straubenhardt project in Baden-Württemberg developed by WIRSOL. Finally, two Siemens Gamesa direct drive wind turbines, one SWT-3.15-142 and one SWT-3.2-113 will be installed near the town of Vetschau in Brandenburg. The installation at the VentusVentures project marks the German debut of the company’s low-wind turbine with 142-meter rotor.

Continuing success for Siemens’ direct-drive onshore wind turbines in Germany: The company has been awarded three further contracts for the supply and installation of 13 of its gearless turbines in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. For the WPD Windpark Damme GmbH & Co. KG, Siemens will install and commission six units of the latest type SWT-3.3-130. A project in Karlum in the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein will receive seven units of the type SWT-3.0- 113. The deals include a long-term service agreement for 15 and 20 years respectively.

Following the 497 MW order for the EnBW Hohe See offshore wind farm, EnBW has also awarded Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy with the installation of the neighbouring 112 MW project EnBW Albatros.

Siemens Wind Power has received an order for a new onshore wind project in the southwest of France. The new wind power plant, owned by Futuren, an international independent renewable energy producer, will be installed on a site close to the towns of Courant and Nachamps (Charente-Maritime) in the region of Nouvelle- Aquitaine. It will consist of seven units of the Siemens direct-drive onshore wind turbine SWT-3.2-113. The contract includes service and maintenance over a period of 21 years.
