UNIDO and World Energy Council to promote sustainable energy policies

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the World Energy Council signed a Joint Declaration to support the global dissemination of sustainable energy solutions.

Under the new partnership, UNIDO and the World Energy Council committed to develop the leadership skills and the overall capacity of energy leaders and policy makers from developing countries; as well as to explore options to promote energy access through global platforms – such as the electrification accelerator within the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) initiative.

    “Strengthening the capacities on energy policies and relevant enabling frameworks is critical to drive the reform of the energy sector in line with the shifting needs of the energy transition” said Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council. “The energy leaders of tomorrow will need to rely on different skill sets from the energy leaders of the past. By working with global actors such as UNIDO as well as leading MBA programs, we will create a powerful outreach for our capacity building and best practices sharing”.

    “We look forward to working with the World Energy Council to promote sustainable energy solutions by focusing on capacity building and promoting energy access”, said UNIDO Director General LI Yong. “We are confident that, through targeted trainings and specialized fellowships, we will help countries design policy instruments that encourage innovation, new business models and a sustainable development of the energy sector”.

The agreement was reached during the World Energy Leaders’ Summit, which was organized by the World Energy Council and the Energy Secretariat of Mexico (Secretaría de Energía, or SENER) to facilitate the dialogue on opportunities and challenges influencing the development of the energy sector.

The VDE Global Energy Storage Competence Cluster will serve the international cleantech sector along the entire value chain and features VDE Prime Labs in Singapore, Germany and the USA. VDE Renewables, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and the Nanyang Technological University Singapore’s (NTU Singapore) Energy Research Institute (ERI@N), launched the Global Energy Storage Competence Cluster (GECC) at the annual Asia Clean Energy Summit in Singapore.
