Sweden: Pioneer of solar district heating
When it comes to district heating, Sweden has made the switch from fossil fuels to biomass and waste heat (see chart). As early as 2015, biomass provided 46 % of the energy in district heating networks across the country, followed by 24 % from waste incineration and 8 % from industrial excess heat. Fossil fuels came only to about 7 % of the around 175 petajoules, or PJ, produced in Sweden in 2015 (latest data available).read more -

New WindGEMINI advances wind turbine operations
DNV GL has launched WindGEMINI, its first digital twin online tool giving wind farm owners and operators advanced insights into turbine condition and performance, enabling better informed wind operation decisions. The WindGEMINI framework is based on digital twin technology, equipping users with digital copies of their wind turbines which are continuously updated in real-time, making use of the stream of information received from turbines and wind farm sensors, to reflect the real conditions experienced by the turbines on site.read more -

Hedging emerges as potential solution for wind energy resource risk
By 2030 only 6% of Europe’s wind energy capacity will be unexposed to market risks through support schemes, down from 75% today. This means that the transition to auctions allocating renewable energy support comes with more exposure to price risk. One new way to address uncertainty on project revenues is hedging against volume risk. Statoil awards battery contract in Batwind project
Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating wind farm, will next year be equipped with a battery to store power from the wind farm. The purpose is to “teach” the battery when to hold back and store electricity, and when to send power to the grid, thus increasing value of the power.read more -

Offshore wind project Rampion starts power generation
The offshore wind farm Rampion in the English Channel has started generating electricity. According to E.ON, the first turbine was commissioned. 115 additional turbines will be connected to the grid in stages over the next few months.read more -
