Gamesa presents off-grid power supply

The Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa has unveiled the prototype of a new off-grid system. The system, which has a capacity of two megawatts, can supply energy using four different sources. Gamesa is hoping to gain an advantage through this, especially in developing countries.

Gamesa's new system can use wind energy, photovoltaics, diesel generators and a battery to supply power. It will be used primarily in areas where there are gaps in the power grid. Ignacio Martin, chairman of the board at Gamesa, stressed that more than 1.2 billion people lack electricity worldwide. "Rural areas in India, Southeast Asia, Africa, islands such as Haiti, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other remote areas such as jungles or deserts can all benefit from this off-grid solution that produces cheap, clean energy."

According to Gamesa, the prototype is the first on the market that can provide a total capacity of two MW and combine four different sources of energy to adapt to the installation location, so that diesel fuel consumption is minimised.

The system includes a G52 850-kW wind turbine, a photovoltaic system with an output of 245 kW and three diesel generators with a total power of 666 kW. In addition, it is equipped with a battery that can store 500 kWh. According to Gamesa, the system can supply 400 families with electricity.

Gamesa plans to sell systems with a total capacity of 1,200 MW during the coming years. The company has gathered initial experience in the off-grid sector: in 2007, Gamesa installed a system on the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), which consists of three diesel generators and three wind turbines.

Gamesa continues to make further inroads into the Indian market, where the company is the number-one OEM, having commanded the leadership spot for three years in a row. Specifically, Gamesa has secured five new orders for the supply of a total of 304 MW to several customers.

With the ‘Tolo 1’ onshore wind project, Siemens Gamesa has secured its first order in Indonesia for the gearless SWT-3.6-130 wind turbines. The wind power plant developed by Equis Energy, the largest renewable energy IPP (independent power producer) in the Asia-Pacific region, will be installed by late 2017. Commissioning is planned for early 2018.

Gamesa continues to reinforce its positioning in India, where the company has ranked as the leading OEM for the last three years, with seven new orders. Specifically, the company will supply a total of 278 MW to several customers.

Siemens Gamesa and DONG Energy have signed an agreement for the supply of 94 8-MW turbines (752 MW) at the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore wind power plant being developed in Dutch waters. The contract additionally includes maintenance of the turbines.
