SUN & WIND ENERGY and Stiftung Offshore Windenergie are proud to present the Alpha Ventus - Operation Offshore book. The alpha ventus offshore test field has ushered in a new era in Germany. Wind energy, already a success story for many years on land, finally got a boost on the high seas. alpha ventus is a milestone for the further extension of offshore wind energy in Germany. This is an area of great promise, as a large share of the German energy demand is expected to be covered by wind turbines in the North and Baltic Seas in the next few decades.

German offshore wind energy development prior to alpha ventus was slow and cumbersome. The various players had to alleviate many concerns and resolve even more problems. All the more breathtaking and fascinating was therefore the installation of alpha ventus, in 30 metres of water some 65 kilometres off the North German coast. This unique worldwide pioneering venture could only be accomplished through the collaboration of many companies and organisations, and raises high hopes for more green power from the sea.

In the first half of 2019, solar, wind and other renewable sources accounted for 44 percent of the electricity consumed in Germany, marking a record high. Preliminary calculations by the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the German Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW) yielded this figure. Renewables had accounted for 39 percent of electricity consumption in the first half of 2018.

ZF Friedrichshafen and Schaeffler are collaborating to develop new solutions for predicting the operating life of wind turbine gearbox components based on the actual loads that occur during operation. Since September, the first wind turbine gearboxes equipped with sensors and condition monitoring systems have been supplying operating data to a cloud-to-cloud solution to enable this to happen.
