Manz offers vacuum coating for crystalline cells

The company Manz AG, based in Reutlingen, Germany, has announced its intention to enter the field of vacuum coating for crystalline solar cells. The firm is introducing a fully automated system for front and back coating. The system, designated VCS 1200, can process up to 1200 wafers per hour, according to the company. For the passivation, Manz uses plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD). The high-capacity plasma source and the carrier system of the VCS 1200 have been registered for a patent, the firm reports. The VCS 1200 is the first completely self-developed system from the daughter company Manz Coating GmbH. Director Mathias Höfler sees the product as an important milestone towards turning Manz into a "complete provider for all the important technological steps in cell production". Manz says that the coating system can be integrated into existing production lines.

With this new development, the German mechanical engineering specialist wants to help cell producers improve their competitiveness, says CEO Dieter Manz: "Everybody is aware of the current troubles in the photovoltaics industry; all the cell producers therefore need to further reduce their costs per watt."
