Joint project "OptiCharge" - Self-sufficient charging station for electric vehicles


Freudenstadt - The joint project "OptiCharge" comprises the development and implementation of a charging station for electric vehicles with self-sufficient energy supply. The complete system is installed in a container the roof of which is equipped with solar cells. Inside, there is a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery which buffers the solar energy and acts as a charging station for electric vehicles. The project partners are the Saarland University, the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, the IZES GmbH of Saarbrücken and the SCHMID Energy Systems GmbH of Freudenstadt.

SCHMID provides the entire energy storage system: a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery with inverter and battery control system. In addition, the experts of the SCHMID Energy Systems GmbH support the application-specific programming of the system and perform process and control optimization in the course of the project.

Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries can store power from renewable energy sources and can make it available again at any time. Charging stations for electric vehicles are a further field of application for which the battery systems offer numerous advantages: Thanks to the high number of charge cycles several electric cars can be charged per day. There is also the possibility of a 100% deep discharge. For this the full capacity of the system is used, thereby avoiding an oversizing of alternative storage systems. Even changes in load direction at full power are possible at any time. Such a situation happens several times a day. It typically occurs when the electric vehicles are "refueled" and the photovoltaic system is at full power at the same time. The neither flammable nor explosive electrolyte ensures a high intrinsic safety of the storage system.

The "OptiCharge" project was launched in the third quarter of 2015 and is scheduled for a term of three years. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy funds the joint project with a total of 1.6 million euros.
