New world record for PERC solar cell efficiency

The German module producer SolarWorld AG has set a new record for industrially produced PERC cells. The photovoltaics calibration laboratory of Fraunhofer ISE, “CalLab”, has confirmed that the solar cells have an efficiency of 21.7 %.

With the new efficiency, SolarWorld breaks its own record for PERC cells (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell). Just in May the company had announced an efficiency record of 21.51 % for industrially produced PERC cells based on crystalline p-type silicon wafers.

Since the solar cells have been manufactured with industrial processes, the new cells can soon enter mass production. As early as this autumn SolarWorld would like to offer PV modules with a capacity of 300 W and more, which use the new technology.

The company has already converted a part of its production capacity for the production of PERC cells. With 800 MW solely for PERC cell manufacture, SolarWorld has the largest production capacity for PERC cells worldwide. 

Frank Asbeck, SolarWorld’s CEO, emphasizes his company’s motivation for further developments: “Our researchers and developers already have an eye on the next efficiency improvements.”

IBC Solar Energy, the international project division of IBC Solar AG, has signed contracts for the realization of two megawatt solar parks in Hungary with a nominal capacity of 51 megawatt peak (MWp) and 45 MWp.
